I was told by a friend this morning that PRs are not entitled to the newly reduced (originally $345 down to $295) maid levy amount introduced in the last budget. Apparently only SG citizens are entitled.

Anyone out there know if this is correct?

It's down to $295 for all. However, if you meet certain criteria it's even down to $200.

Thanks everyone!  I rather suspected that my friend had got it wrong.

Every little bit counts...

What about non-PR's and non-citizens i.e. your regular employment pass holding expat in Singapore?

I am paying $345. Should this be $295??

I am non-PR, non-Singaporean... the levy for this month is $295.

As I understand, last month's levy was $345 and fluctuates, depending on the demand for FDWs.

the levy has just changed for non-Singaporeans from $345 to $295 from April. Your payment should be altered automatically this month.

The reason the FDW levy has been reduced last month for all employers is to recognise that the new rules regarding minimum age and higher education for new maids will mean that they should be paid a higher salary. The earlier reduction for Singaporean citizens only is a separate bonus for Singaporeans to bring down the cost of elderly and child care while working. It only applies to households with kids under 12 or elderly relatives living in and not to PR or other non-Singaporean nationals.

This reduction was given to ensure the maids get an increase in wages or at least a fair wage - ie, it wasn't for us to save even more money!!!!

No, I am cynical enough to believe that most people will pay their maid the minimum they can get away with - and I've only been here six months.

Personally, I pay my maid way above the going rate because she is a mature woman that does an excellent job for my family but then someone like you probably doesn't understand that!

Have a good day!
